Eagle Scout Scholarship

2013 Award Recipient

Eugene DeNezza Jr.

Eugene DeNezza Jr. is a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Unit No. 1115 (Troop 1115 and Sea Scout Ship 1115) in Springfield, Virginia. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 2009 at the age of 13 after earning 21 Merit Badges, which was quite an accomplishment at that young age, as the average age of Scouts reaching the rank of Eagle is 17.6 years old. Following his Eagle Badge award Eugene earned 29 additional Merit Badges for a total of 50 Merit Badges through 2011 -- and has received the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Eagle Palm Awards.

During this period Eugene held several leadership positions in Troop/Ship 1115, including Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe, Head Instructor, Crew Vice President, Head Guide, and Chesapeake Flotilla Bosun. In 2012 Eugene was selected to complete Sea Scout Experience Advanced Leadership (SEAL) Training.

On January 13, 2013, Eugene passed his Sea Scouting Quartermaster Bridge of Honor. When presenting the Quartermaster Award to Eugene, BSA Sea Scout National Director Keith Christopher noted: “It’s an extremely rare achievement… to earn both Eagle Scout and Quartermaster Awards as less than two-tenths of one percent of Scouts (1 in 5,000) have accomplished this.”

In 2013 Eugene was selected to lead the Sea Scouts as Northeast Region Fleet Boatswain by Northeast regional Commodores and Skippers from Maine to Virginia in a regional competition, serving as NER Fleet Boatswain Mate during 2013 and Fleet Boatswain in 2014.

As with all scholarship participants, Eugene submitted a 4 generation Ancestor Chart and a 500 word essay with bibliography. He chose “Were there any Italian-Americans in the American Revolution?” as his essay topic.

As the 2013 Chapter winner, Eugene received the SAR Eagle Scout Medal, certificate and a $150 cash scholarship. His essay was submitted to the Virginia Society, where he placed third overall in State level competition. Eugene has been accepted to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and will begin his studies in the fall of 2014. We are proud of Eugene, and wish him well in all of his future endeavors.
